
Michigan Falls Short Against No. 8 Rutgers in Regular-Season Finale

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team fell, 13-12, to No. 8-ranked Rutgers on Sunday's (April 25) Senior Day at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. With the loss, U-M will be the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
The Wolverines (2-8, 2-8 B1G) jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with goals from sophomore standout Josh Zawada and junior attackman Bryce Clay. Rutgers (8-2, 8-2 B1G) answered with a goal at the 7:31 mark in the first quarter. Graduate student Avery Myers responded with his first goal of the day to give the Wolverines a 3-1 lead with 1:20 left in the first. The Scarlet Knights scored a goal in with 12 seconds remaining in the quarter, leaving the contest at 3-2 for the Wolverines entering the second quarter.
Rutgers came out firing to start the second quarter, scoring three goals in two minutes to give it a 5-3 lead with 12:07 remaining in the half. The Wolverines and Scarlet Knights then traded goals until the 2:14 mark in the second quarter, when sophomore Jake Bonomi and freshman Michael Boehm scored back-to-back goals to close out the half, cutting the Rutgers lead to 8-7.
The third quarter saw three goals from both teams, as Boehm, Myers, and sophomore midfielder Jacob Jackson each netted a goal for the Wolverines to make it an 11-10 game in favor of Rutgers entering the matchup's final frame.
The Scarlet Knights opened the final quarter with a goal, but Michigan battled back with two goals from Myers and Clay, with Clay's goal knotting the score at 12 with 9:10 remaining in the game. After strong goaltending by junior John Kiracofe, a rebound shot was knocked in by Rutgers with 5:37 remaining in the contest. This would bring the score to its final place of 13-12.
Boehm led the Wolverines with six points on the day (two goals, four assists), and Myers and Zawada each had hat tricks. Junior faceoff specialist Nick Rowlett had a career day, tying his career high in ground balls (13), also while going 18-for-29 from the dot. Kiracofe's 10 saves helped keep the Wolverines in contention throughout the game.
The Wolverines dominated the ground-ball battle, 39-29, and were 18-for-19 on clears. The Wolverines tied a season low with 10 turnovers, which is seven fewer than the last matchup against the Scarlet Knights.
Prior to the contest, U-M honored 13 departing seniors and graduate students.
With the Big Ten regular season wrapped up, U-M secured the No. 5 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, and will travel to Columbus, Ohio, to take on the Ohio State next weekend (May 1-2).
