Wolverine Notes
• Michigan has won six straight games after a 77-58 win at No. 22 Ohio State (Jan. 27). U-M has relied on solid shooting and a staunch effort on the defensive end over the stretch. Michigan is averaging 76.3 points per game on 49.5 percent shooting from the floor and 41.5 percent shooting from three-point range over the last five games. On the flip side, U-M has held five of the last six opponents to fewer than 60 points. Over the spurt, the Michigan defense is allowing just 53.5 points per game on 35.1 percent shooting from the floor, while forcing 14.5 turnovers per game. Michigan has also dominated the glass over the last six, holding a +13.5 margin.
• Senior Naz Hillmon grabbed 12 boards against Ohio State (Jan. 27), putting her in first place all-time in Michigan history with 935 rebounds through 107 games. Trish Andrew had been the program leader since 1993, grabbing 928 rebounds in her 113 career games. Hillmon is on pace to become the first player in program history to grab 1,000 rebounds and just the third player in Michigan basketball history. The men's basketball program has a pair of players who grabbed at least 1,000 boards in Rudy Tomjanovich (1,039) and Bill Buntin (1,037). Hillmon is one double-double away from tying Andrew's program record of 44.
• For the first time in program history, there will be a pair of top-10 teams playing at Crisler Center. Indiana, coming in at No. 6, is Michigan's fourth top-10 opponent of the season. U-M has wins over No. 5 Baylor and No. 8 Maryland, while falling to No. 10 Louisville.
• Michigan is off to an 18-2 start, setting a new standard through 20 games for the best start in program history. U-M has already topped last year's win total of 16 after playing just 22 total games.
• U-M has won six straight games to move its Big Ten record to 9-1, its best through 10 games in program history. The six-game conference winning streak is tied for the third-longest in program history.
• Michigan is first in the Big Ten in rebounding margin at +9.7 boards per game, going 16-0 when winning the battle on the glass. U-M is second in both combined team rebounds, grabbing 40.1 caroms per contest, and in combined opponent rebounds (30.4 rpg). U-M is 2-2 this season when getting outrebounded. Michigan has two of the top-eight rebounders in the Big Ten in Naz Hillmon (fifth, 8.9 rpg) and Emily Kiser (eighth, 8.1 rpg).
• The contest between Michigan and Indiana will match up the two best defensive teams in the Big Ten. Indiana leads the way, allowing just 57.8 points per game, with Michigan right behind in second at 58.5 points per game.
• Two Big Ten teams were among those listed in the first of the three NCAA Women's Basketball Committee regular-season top-16 seed reveals announced Thursday night (Jan. 27). Indiana checked in as the No. 6 national seed, while Michigan was the No. 9 national seed, according to the Committee. The next top-16 seed reveal will take place Feb. 10, with the final one occurring Feb. 28 before the official 68-team NCAA Tournament field is unveiled on Selection Sunday, March 13.
• No. 6 Indiana (14-2, 6-0 B1G) enters the game on a nine-game winning streak and is coming off an 73-68 overtime win at Purdue (Jan. 16). The Hoosiers are averaging 72.8 points per game on 46.9 percent shooting, while allowing 57.8 points per game to their opponents on 37.2 percent shooting. IU has five double-figure scorers in Mackenzie Holmes (17.9 ppg), Grace Berger (15.1 ppg), Ali Patberg (12.3 ppg), Aleksa Gulbe (11.5 ppg) and Nicole Cardaño-Hillary (10.9 ppg).
