PITTSBURGH, Pa. -- Using a pair of 70s (-1) by senior Sophia Trombetta and sophomore Monet Chun, the 18th-ranked University of Michigan women's golf team used a 285 (+1) team total today (Friday, April 22) and are tied for second after the opening day of the Big Ten Championships being held at the Fox Chapel Golf Club.
Michigan State is atop the leaderboard after the first-day posting a 282 (-2) led by first-day leader Leila Raines, who carded a 68 (-3) and is tied with Nebraska's Michaela Vavrova (68, -3). The Spartans hold a three-shot lead over U-M and Purdue, who each posted team tallies of 285. The three conference squads will be paired together for Saturday's round.
"It was a full team effort today, and a solid start,"" said U-M head coach Jan Dowling. "We're only a third of the way through the tournament so there is plenty of golf left. We are just going to stay focused on us by staying patient and enjoying the moment. That is all we need to do."
After play was delayed an hour, the 14-team field began at 9:30 a.m. U-M opened the championship as the No. 1 seed for the first time in program history and opened the day in the final pairing with MSU and Illinois.
Trombetta began the day birdieing two of her first five holes before a pair of bogeys had her make the turn even par. With a third birdie of the round on the par 3, 11th, she got back into the red and closed with seven straight pars to post her second sub-par tally of the season.
Chun started her championship with three straight bogeys, before getting red hot and birdieing five over her next eight holes to go two-under par after 11 holes. Two more bogeys on Nos 15 and 16 drew her even before she closed with a sixth birdie of the day on the 18th hole.
With a 72 (+1) from graduate student Ashley Kim, who is competing in her fourth Big Ten championship, gives the Wolverines three among the top 20 as she is tied for 16th. Despite a double bogey on her opening hole, she birdied Nos. 3 and 9 to help her make the turn one-over. That is where she would stay and she recorded nine straight pars on the backside to finish with a 72.
As for the rest of the starters, junior Mikaela Schulz is tied for 26th (73, +2), senior Ashley Lau is tied for 40th (75) and junior Hailey Borja is tied for 68th (79).
