Sophomore Justin Brown surpassed his collegiate total in goals, scoring a game-high five goals on only six shots for the first hat trick of his career. The midfielder entered the game with just four in his career.
Michigan (7-5, 0-3 B1G) fell behind early and trailed 2-0 before Brown netted his first of two goals in the half at the 5:21 mark of the first quarter to cut the PSU lead to 2-1. Another Nittany Lion marker with 2:09 to play in the first put the hosts up 3-1.
Brown scored again at the 9:56 mark in the second on a feed from freshman Ryan Cohen to make it 3-2, but the Nittany Lions finished the half on a 3-0 run to carry a 6-2 score into the break.
In the first half, U-M out-shot the Nittany Lions 23-21 but turned the ball over ten times. Sophomore goalie Shane Carr had eight stops, while senior Nick Rowlett went 6-of-10 at the dot with five ground ball pick-ups.
Following a Penn State score on the extra-man coming out of the half to increase the deficit to five, junior longpole Ryan Schriber scored his third tally of the season at the 9:36 mark on a helper from classmate Michael Cosgrove. The goal snapped a 15-plus minute scoreless streak and brought the Wolverines within four goals at 7-3.
Brown secured his hat trick with 6:56 to go in the third, making the contest a three-goal affair at 7-4. Penn State's Dan Reaume made the score 8-4 with 47 ticks to go in the fourth, in what proved to be the final Nittany Lion goal in regulation.
