EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team lodged a strong defensive stand but narrowly fell to No. 3 Northwestern 1-0 on a late penalty corner on Sunday afternoon (Oct. 1) at Lakeside Field.
The Wolverines stopped 13 straight Northwestern penalty corners and junior/sophomore goalkeeper Caylie McMahon earned a career-high nine saves before the Wildcats broke through on their 14th corner attempt at the 54:51 mark. Michigan blocked the initial shot, but the ball kicked back out to the left side of the arc and NU put a reverse chip off the left post and into the cage for the late game-winner.
Michigan (5-5, 1-3 Big Ten) applied some sustained pressure over the waning minutes following the goal but struggled to penetrate the Wildcat circle.
Northwestern (11-1, 4-0 Big Ten) outshot the Wolverines 25-4, including a 10-0 differential in the second quarter, and outcornered them 14-1. McMahon earned four saves in the second quarter and three in the fourth. Her previous career high is eight saves, which she tallied against North Carolina and Wake Forest over the season-opening weekend.
The Wolverines will return to the road next Friday (Oct. 6) when they take on Rutgers at 3 p.m. at the Bauer Track and Field Complex in Piscataway, N.J. The game will be streamed live on B1G+.
