
Program Record 51 Wolverines See Action as U-M Knocks off Canisius in Home Opener

» Every healthy U-M student-athlete saw action in Tuesday's win, setting a new program-record with 51 players hitting the field. Eleven different players scored a goal while 14 different players recorded a point.

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Canisius 21-5 in the team's home opener on Tuesday (Feb. 13) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (1-1) had a dominant start to the game, scoring seven unanswered goals in the opening quarter.
Graduate Justin Tiernan opened the scoring at 14:06 with an assist from sophomore Bo Lockwood, and added another goal at 11:57 that was assisted by junior Ryan Cohen. Helped by an assist from junior Aidan Mulholland, Tiernan scored his third goal of the game with 8:55 left in the first quarter. Graduate Christian Ronda added to the Wolverine lead at the 8:01 mark with an assist from senior Michael Boehm, and an unassisted goal from Cohen at 6:09 brought the score to 5-0 as Canisius called timeout. The first-quarter U-M scoring surge continued as senior Isaac Aronson found the back of the net at 5:30 with an assist from Ronda and less than a minute later (4:33), Boehm added another goal with the assist coming from Tiernan.
After seven unanswered goals, Canisius (0-1) responded with a goal of its own with 2:38 left in the first quarter, bringing the score to 7-1. Michigan added three more goals to its lead in the final two minutes of the first quarter, however, taking a 10-1 lead. After providing the assist for Tiernan's fourth goal of the contest at the 1:46 mark, Cohen found the back of the net again at 1:19 in an unassisted effort. A solo effort from Lockwood with 32 seconds left brought the lead to nine goals in favor of the Wolverines.
Following a high-scoring opening quarter, Michigan was held scoreless for over eight minutes at the start of the second quarter. Boehm broke the scoring drought at the 6:25 mark as Cohen provided the helper. Around twenty seconds later (6:03), graduate Beau Pederson scored off an assist from Boehm. Senior Justin Wietfeldt won the next faceoff, providing the assist for a goal from senior Grant McCurry at 5:53, and Cohen tallied his fourth assist of the game as Aronson found the back of the net at 4:23. Boehm added another goal at the 3:17 mark with an assist from Lockwood before Canisius scored in the final seconds of the quarter -- bringing the score to 15-2 at the half.
Boehm opened the second-half scoring with two goals at the 11:40 and 10:43 mark, and Lockwood recorded assists on both goals. With 8:17 left in the third quarter, Canisus recorded its third goal of the game, making the score 17-3. Following a Canisus penalty, Lockwood recorded his fifth assist of the game on an extra-man goal by Tiernan at the 6:26 mark of the third quarter.
Mulholland converted on another extra-man opportunity at the 10:20 mark following a Canisius slashing penalty. Another goal came at the 7:40 mark by sophomore Ryan Lyngklip with the helper from junior Graham Hertzberg. Late in the fourth quarter, Lockwood took a 30-second penalty for delay of game and Canisus took advantage of the extra-man opportunity, scoring with 4:35 left. Freshman Alex Lobel scored at the 3:36 mark as junior Emmett Houlihan provided the assist, bringing the final score to 21-5.
Eleven players found the back of the net in the game as Boehm led scoring with seven points (five goals and two assists) while three other Wolverines recorded six-point games. Tiernan finished the game with five goals on seven shots and one assist. Cohen contributed two goals with four assists, while Lockwood had a career-high five assists alongside one goal.
Wietfeldt won 13-of-18 draws and collected eight ground balls, while graduate defender Cathal Roberts had two ground balls and three caused turnovers.
A program-record 51 student-athletes saw game action in the victory, with nine making their U-M debuts.
Canisius was led by Jackson Webster, who scored four goals on the night.
Next up, Michigan hosts the Hobart Statesmen on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Detroit Country Day School in Beverly Hills, Mich. Faceoff is slated for 1 p.m. Tickets will not be made available to the general public.
