
Second-Half Surge Lifts Michigan Over Hobart

BEVERLY HILLS, Mich. -- The No. 14-ranked University of Michigan men's lacrosse team defeated Hobart 18-8 on Saturday (Feb. 17) at Detroit Country Day School.
Leading 6-5 at the half, Michigan (2-1) outscored Hobart (0-2) 5-1 in the third quarter and 12-3 in the second half en route to its second victory of the season.
The two sides traded goals in the opening quarter, with senior Michael Boehm getting U-M on the board first at 12:48, followed by graduate student Justin Tiernan at 6:37 as the scoreline sat even after one quarter of action.
The Statesmen rattled off three straight markers to start the second quarter, taking a 4-2 lead at the 12:35 mark before the Wolverines answered back with a trio. Tiernan (11:21) and classmate Christian Ronda (10:33) tied the contest at 4-4. Following the Ronda score, senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt won the ensuing draw and cashed in with 11:18 left in the first half.
Following two Hobart goals, junior Ryan Cohen ran the score to 6-5 at 2:56 of the second quarter and the game went to the half as a one-goal affair.
Cohen added another to start the third quarter and Hobart's Anthony Datteslas answered at 10:13. From there, the Wolverines rattled off 11 straight goals, keyed by a pair from senior Isaac Aronson and three from Tiernan as the Wolverine defense held the Statemen scoreless for nearly 26 minutes.
Sophomore goalie Hunter Taylor stopped 12 shots on the afternoon and allowed only one goal in the second half. Michigan dominated the ground-ball category with a 37-18 advantage, keyed by five from defender Jack Whitney and seven from faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt, who also went 11-of-20 at the dot.
Tiernan extended his goal streak to 15 games with his five scores, while Boehm led all scorers with seven points (two goals, five assists). Sophomore Bo Lockwood also had four points (1g, 3a).
Following the conclusion of a two-game homestand, U-M will next embark on a three-game spring break trip. The first stop will be the Southwest Florida Shootout against Marquette on Feb. 24 in Naples, Fla.
