STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- A nine-run seventh inning pushed the University of Michigan baseball team to an 11-6 series-clinching win over Penn State on Sunday (March 24) in the rubber match at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
Michigan (9-15, 2-1 Big Ten) tallied 10 hits, with Dylan Stanton and AJ Garcia each collecting three hits and an RBI. Stanton added three runs, while Garcia scored twice. On the mound, the Wolverines got a strong start from Mitch Voit, (2-3) who allowed three runs (two earned) and scattered six hits over 7.1 innings with four strikeouts and no walks.
Penn State (12-9, 1-2 Big Ten) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first after a leadoff single and a two-out double.
U-M put the leadoff batter on base and in scoring position in each of the first five innings, but were unable to bring him home, but Voit did his part to keep the Nittany Lions off the board over the span, allowing just three hits and back-to-back 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth.
In the sixth, the Wolverines' leadoff man did not get aboard, but they did knot the game. A Stanton two-out double was followed two batters later by a Kyle Dernedde single through the left side to plate Stanton. Voit then retired the Nittany Lions in order for the third straight inning in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, the first seven Michigan hitters reached base to anchor a nine-run frame. A bases-loaded Stephen Hrustich double plated a pair of runs to put U-M on top 3-1. A run each was scored on an error, a sacrifice fly, and after loading the bases again, Voit reached for the second time in the inning -- this time on a run-scoring error. A pair of wild pitches plated two more Wolverines runs before the inning ended, but they led 10-1. In all, U-M sent 14 batters to the plate and scored its runs on just three hits. Voit kept rolling on the mound, tossing his fourth consecutive 1-2-3 inning.
Stanton added his third hit of the day to lead off the eighth inning and advanced to second on a Dernedde and scored on Garcia's bloop double to left field to push the U-M advantage to 11-1. PSU scored five times in the bottom of the eighth. Voit allowed two runs, one earned, before his day was done. Zach Slayden allowed three runs, one earned, over his 0.1 inning before Jacob Denner took the mound and struck out the first batter he saw to end the inning.
Denner retired the Nittany Lions in order in the ninth to give Michigan the series win to open Big Ten play.
The Wolverines return home for a five-game homestand, starting Tuesday (March 26) with a non-conference game against Michigan State. First pitch scheduled for 4 p.m., and the game will be streamed live on B1G+.
