Michigan Takes Down OSU, Secures Big Ten Tournament Home Contest

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse held on for a 13-12 victory over rival Ohio State on Saturday night (Apil 20) at OSU Lacrosse Stadium, and in doing so captured the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament.
With the win, U-M will host the fifth-seeded Buckeyes on Saturday (April 27) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Game time is to be announced, with tickets for the contest going on sale on Monday (April 22) at 9 a.m.
The Wolverines (7-6, 2-3 Big Ten) jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first quarter with senior Isaac Aronson opening the scoring at 9:49. Following an OSU goal leveled the game at one, Tiernan (man-up, 5:20), Boehm (man-up, 3:13) and senior Kyle Stephenson (3:31) stretched U-M's lead to three goals after one.
Aronson's second goal came at 13:53 in the second quarter to give the Wolverines a 5-1 lead before the Buckeyes notched two straight. Junior Ryan Cohen ended the run at 4:38 to bring it to 6-3. Ohio State closed the half with two more as the contest sat at 6-5 at the intermission.
Michigan outscored the Buckeyes 6-2 in the third quarter. Aronson notched his third goal at 13:01, while graduate student Christian Ronda had back-to-back markers at 11:07 and 10:46 to make it 10-6 before junior Aidan Mulholland cashed in at 4:45 to push the score to at 11-6.
Leading 12-7 heading into the final quarter, Cohen's third made it 13-7 at 14:51 in what proved to be the final Wolverine marker of the contest. OSU scored five unanswered goals over the final nine minutes to cut the U-M advantage to 13-12 with 1:16 to play. However, the Wolverine defense clamped down to hang on to the victory.
Senior faceoff man Justin Wietfeldt went 18-for-29 at the dot with 12 ground balls, while Boehm and graduate-student defender Catahal Roberts caused a pair of turnovers apiece. Sophomore Mason Whitney earned another starting nod on close defense and had five ground balls. Sophomore goalie Hunter Taylor made 11 stops in goal, with seven coming in the second half.

Michigan takes on the Buckeyes in the Big Ten quarterfinals for the third straight season next Saturday (April 27) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium. Last season, the Wolverines defeated OSU 14-10 in the B1g Ten Tournament opener in Ann Arbor.
