BOULDER, Colo. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team gave up a pair of goals over a three-minute span in the first half and could not pull even, falling 2-0 to Colorado on Sunday afternoon (Aug. 25) at Prentup Field.
Michigan (0-3-0) totaled 12 shots for the game, putting four on goal compared to 18 shots and eight on goal for Colorado (3-1-0). Stephanie Sparkowski made six saves in goal for the Maize and Blue.
Michigan pressured early, getting a corner kick in just the first minute of the game after Gabrielle Prych had a shot blocked in front of the goal. Colorado was called for offsides in the sixth minute to negate a goal as both teams settled in during the early going.
The Buffaloes broke through in the 17th minute, converting on a shot from the top of the box that found the lower-right corner of the goal for a 1-0 lead.
The lead was extended to 2-0 in the 20th minute when Colorado converted a corner kick, getting a head on the ball for its second goal in just over three minutes of game time.
Colorado threatened again in the 29th minute off a set piece from the right side of the field, sending a ball into the box with the first shot blocked by a Michigan defender and the rebound scooped up by Sparkowski to keep the deficit at two.
Michigan had a good look at halving the deficit in the 33rd minute off a set piece, with Jenna Lang sending the ball into the box, but Erin Junkmann's header went just wide. Michigan controlled much of the action for the remainder of the first half but could not find the back of the net, heading to halftime down 2-0.
Lang came off the bench in the second half, firing a shot right after she entered the contest in the 60th minute, but Colorado's Jordan Nytes made her third save of the contest to keep Michigan off the board. The Wolverine defense stood tall over the next several minutes, withstanding back-to-back corner kicks, a ball off the crossbar and getting a spectacular save from Sparkowski to keep the CU lead at 2-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining.
Michigan got three shots off over the final 20 minutes, including one from Ella Jablinskey that was saved by the Colorado keeper.
Michigan returns home to U-M Soccer Stadium to host Notre Dame on Thursday (Aug. 29) at 7 p.m., and the game will streamed live on B1G+. Michigan's senior class will be honored prior to the contest as part of Senior Night, presented by the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan.
