ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team lost to Iowa, 3-2, on Saturday afternoon (April 19) at the Wilpon Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium, in the second game of the series.
Michigan (23-16, 8-9 Big Ten) was given a chance to win on the mound with a strong outing from Kurt Barr (4-3), who pitched seven innings with eight strikeouts and allowed three runs — only one earned — on six hits. Max Debiec and Will Rogers pitched the final two innings and kept the Hawkeyes scoreless. Offensively, three Wolverines tallied two hits with Mitch Voit, Jonathan Kim, and Benjamin Casillas all reaching base twice.
The Wolverines struck first with a solo home run by Voit in the bottom of the first. Kim doubled in the second inning but was left stranded following a groundout.
Iowa (26-11, 16-4 Big Ten) tied the game with a sacrifice fly in the third, scoring an unearned run after a dropped foul ball. In the bottom half, Casillas singled and advanced to second on a groundout. Voit was intentionally walked, but a groundout ended the scoring chance with two runners left on.
The Hawkeyes added two more runs in the fourth after an error led to another unearned run from an Iowa single. Kim singled again in the bottom of the fourth, marking his second hit of the game, but was left on base.
The fifth and sixth innings went 1-2-3 for both teams as Iowa maintained its 3-1 lead. Michigan got two runners on in the seventh, but a double play and a pop-up ended the frame scoreless.
Debiec took the mound to start the eighth, and a 4-6-3 double play helped keep the Hawkeyes off the board for the fourth straight inning. The Wolverines opened the bottom of the inning with three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. A sacrifice fly from Jeter Ybarra trimmed the deficit to one, but a strikeout and flyout left two runners stranded.
Rogers entered in the ninth with a runner on and retired all three batters he faced, including an inning-ending strikeout. In the bottom half, Iowa recorded two strikeouts before Greg Pace Jr. singled to bring the tying run to the plate. The Wolverines couldn't capitalize, grounding out to end the game.
Michigan will close out the three-game series against the Hawkeyes on Sunday (April 20) with first pitch set for 1 p.m., streaming live on B1G+.
