ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Senior Mara Janess of the University of Michigan women's golf team earned an individual invitation to the NCAA Columbus Regional, Monday through Wednesday (May 5-7) and is one of six individuals joining a 12-team field playing the three-day, 54-hole event at the OSU Golf Club's Scarlet Course, which will be set up for a par 72 at 6,358 yards.
Notes
• Janess begins her quest to advance to the 2025 NCAA Finals with a practice round on Sunday (May 4). She will be vying for the top individual spot among non-qualifying teams to advance to the Omni La Costa Resort and Spa championships in Carlsbad, Calif. Janess is scheduled to tee off each round at 9:50 a.m.
• Along with Janess, there are five other individuals invited to the Columbus Regional, including Jillian Cosler (Bradley), Savannah de Bock (Eastern Michigan), Isabella McCauley (Minnesota), Neeranuch Prajunpanich (Youngstown State) and Vanessa Zhang (Harvard). The 12 teams, by seed, are Arkansas, LSU, Ohio State, Kansas, Houston, SMU, UNLV, Illinois, Kent State, Illinois State, Xavier and Oakland.
• Michigan has had five individual invitations to an NCAA regional. Laura Olin was the first to earn a bid to the Central Regional in 2004 (t-17th; 75-76-78/229), while Amy Schmucker followed in 2006 (t-71st; 80-82-78/240). In 2010, Ashley Bauer (t-76th; 78-87-80/245) added a third trip to the Central Regional. Nearly a decade later, Ashley Lau (t-47th; 76-77-72/225) earned a trip to the 2019 East Lansing Regional. Janess' bid is the fifth all-time.
• Overall, U-M has been represented in regional competition by the team or an individual 18 times, with 13 team appearances (2001, '02, '05, '07, '09, '11, '12, '16, '17, '21, '22, '23, and '24). U-M has advanced to the NCAA Finals five times (2002, '16, '17, '21, and '22), earning top-20 national finishes.
• In a career season, Janess paced the Maize and Blue through 10 events, leading the team with her 73.76 scoring average, which ranks as the 10th best all-time. Averaging nearly two and a half strokes better than her prior best season, she fired a team-best six sub-par rounds, including a career-low 69 (-3) -- her first career sub-70 round. With four rounds at even-par, her 10 total rounds of par or better tripled her prior best of three.
• Leading U-M in five of 10 events, Janess has seven top-20 finishes with three top-10s and a career-best tie for third at the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational (Feb. 16-17) -- her first career top-five finish. At the Sun Coast, she tallied a U-M season- and career-best 212 (-4) 54-hole total. In her spring season alone (six events), she posted five top-20 individual finishes and was instrumental in U-M capturing the Terrapin Invitational team title (April 6-7).
• Michigan played a nine-event regular season, posting two top-five finishes, including winning the Terrapin Invitational. In the Big Ten Championships, U-M earned an eighth-place finish. The Wolverines averaged a 297.10 team scoring average, including tallying a 287 (-1) twice -- the second round of the Terrapin Invite and the final round of the Spartan Sun Coast Invitational.
