Michigan Puts Up Seven Spot, Cruises Past Yale

EVANSTON, Ill. -- The 13th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored seven unanswered goals, including four in a 12-minute span at the end of the first half, to defeat Yale, 7-1, in a neutral-site game on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 8) at Lakeside Field. Michigan had five goal scorers in its highest scoring output since 2009.

Yale scored the initial goal at the nine-minute mark as Gabby Garcia put the Bulldogs on the board. Sophomore Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) then scored the equalizer unassisted at 22:49 and classmate Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) put the eventual game-winner in the net at 26:55. Freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) tipped in senior Bryn Bain's (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) pass to make it 3-1 at 30:18. Just before halftime, freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) took a Bain pass and beat Yale goalkeeper Emily Cain to make it 4-1 at the break.
Wouters put Michigan's fifth goal on the board at 54:11 with an assist to McCallister. Sophomore Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) got into the scoring act, scoring off an assist by sophomore Kim Sheaffer (Sinking Spring, Pa./Wilson) at 55:30 and deflecting a Fobe shot in the net at 64:23, giving the Maize and Blue the final 7-1 victory.
Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) made two saves in the win, her fourth of the season. Michigan outshot the Bulldogs, 14-9, and had a 7-3 penalty-corner advantage. Bain and freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) led the Maize and Blue with three shots apiece.
Michigan returns to Ocker Field and the University of Michigan campus on Sunday, Oct. 16, against Big Ten foe Penn State. The game starts at noon and it is Michigan's "Stick it to Cancer" game for Breast Cancer Awareness month.

NOTES
• Michigan scores seven goals in a game for the first time since Oct. 3, 2009, when the Maize and Blue defeated Saint Louis 7-0.
• This is the first meeting between the two schools. Michigan now is 5-2 all-time against teams from the Ivy League.
• Michigan has now won 12 straight games in Evanston, Ill. This includes winning the 2004 and 2010 Big Ten Tournaments on the Northwestern campus. The last loss by Michigan in Evanston was on Nov. 3, 2001, in a 3-0 loss to Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament.
• Michigan had six different goal scorers for the first time since that Saint Louis win in 2009. In that game, seven different Wolverines had goals.
• Michigan scored four goals in the first half for the second time this season. The Wolverines had four goals in the first 35 minutes in a 5-1 win over Miami on Sept. 24.
• Michelle Roberts scored two goals in today's win. It is her second multi-goal game of the season. She had two goals in a 5-0 win over Central Michigan on Sept. 9.
• Ainsley McCallister now has goals in back-to-back games after scoring her first goal of the season in a win over Northwestern and opening the scoring today.
• Bryn Bain continues her point scoring streak at five games after dishing out two assists.
• Rachael Mack had the game-winning goal today. Mack now has six career game-winning goals for Michigan.
