EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team dropped a 1-0 heartbreaker to No. 7 Northwestern in the shootout on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 29) at the Wildcats' Lakeside Field. The Wolverines put all six of their shootout attempts in the cage but had two goals overturned, including one on referral to end the contest.
Sophomore Anna Spieker came up with a big save in the fifth round of the shootout to force another sudden-victory round. Northwestern converted, and sophomore Kathryn Peterson knocked in a second-effort shot just before the buzzer sounded. The Wildcats challenged the goal, and it was overturned to hand Michigan its second shootout loss of the season. It also snapped U-M's five-game win streak.
Senior captain Guadalupe Fernandez Lacort's goal in the third shootout round also was waved off after the fact by the side umpire. Michigan challenged, but the call was upheld.
Shots (8-8) and corners (4-4) were perfectly even between the teams through regulation and two overtime periods, though the Wolverines put five shots on goal to Northwestern's one.
Michigan nearly put the game away early in the first overtime, during which it outshot the Wildcats, 4-0, in the frame, after a flurry in the opening three minutes. Fernandez Lacort sent a reverse chip onto net, and sophomore Sofia Southam nearly knocked in the rebound but NU goalkeeper Florien Marcussen got a piece of it. The Wolverines requested a referral on the play, looking for a penalty corner, but the video was inconclusive.
Spieker made one stop -- in the third quarter -- in the loss, while Northwestern's Marcussen earned five saves.
The Wolverines (6-3) will return home for a pair of games at Phyllis Ocker Field next weekend when they will host Appalachian State at 2 p.m. on Saturday (Oct. 5) and Michigan State at 4 p.m. on Sunday (Oct. 6). Admission is free for all regular-season home games; the MSU slate will be aired live on Big Ten Network.
