ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team took a commanding 16-9 victory over Cleveland State in its season opener Saturday (Feb. 8) at U-M Lacrosse Stadium.
Michigan (1-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first quarter, holding Cleveland State (0-2) scoreless until the 7:24 mark in the opening stanza. U-M finished the first quarter leading, 4-1, led by freshman Josh Zawada who had a goal and an assist in the first period.
Cleveland State scored a goal to start the second quarter, but Michigan responded with a five-goal run anchored by two goals and an assist from Bryce Clay. The Michigan defense held CSU scoreless up to the final 34 seconds of the first half.
Leading, 9-3, at half and winning the ground ball battle, 23-16, Michigan and Cleveland State traded blows throughout the third quarter. Key man-up goals from junior Kevin Mack and his classmate Alex Buckanavage gave the Maize and Blue a 13-6 lead entering the fourth.
CSU scored to begin the fourth quarter, but quickly lost that momentum when Michigan got a man-up chance that Mack converted. Michigan and Cleveland State each scored two goals in the remainder of the final period.
