ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 12-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored the go-ahead goal in the waning seconds of the third quarter to earn a 2-1 win over No. 18 Wake Forest in its final game of the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Sunday (Sept. 1) in front of 617 fans at Phyllis Ocker Field.
Senior/junior Abby Tamer scored the game-winner at the 44:57 mark -- with just three seconds remaining on the clock in the -- with a beauty from the left post. Freshman Eva Bernardy took a free hit on the right side outside the circle and hammered to the middle of the circle. It hit a scrum in front and deflected high; Tamer, camped on the left post, knocked it out of the air and batted it to the lower right corner of the cage for her first goal of the season.
Tamer also assisted on the first Wolverine goal at the 13:41 mark, coming on the game's first penalty corner less than a minute after Wake Forest broke through with a score late in the first quarter. Tamer took the insert from graduate student Kate McLaughlin on the left side of the arc and fed it back to the left post, where McLaughlin tipped it in for her first of the season.
Wake Forest scored the game's first goal at 12:52, sending an aerial into the circle from the Michigan 25 before knocking it down and banging it into the lower left corner. U-M challenged the call -- looking for a high stick -- but it was upheld to give the Demon Deacons the first lead.
Michigan dominated possession, outshooting the Demon Deacons, 17-4, and outcornering them, 7-1. Sophomore/freshman Hala Silverstein faced just the one shot on goal, while Wake goalkeeper Ellie Todd stopped eight of 10 Michigan shots on goal.
Michigan (1-1) will hit the road for a pair of non-conference games next weekend. U-M will take on Boston University at 6 p.m. on Friday (Sept. 6) at New Balance Field in Boston, Mass., before facing Providence at noon on Sunday (Sept. 8) at Lennon Family Field in Providence, R.I.
