The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team will play host to the No. 1-ranked Maryland Terrapins on Saturday (April 2) at noon from U-M Lacrosse Stadium. The contest will be broadcast via B1G+ and serve as Military Appreciation Day.
Wolverine Bites
• Michigan enters the week receiving votes in the latest USILA Coaches Poll and Inside Lacrosse Media Poll. A win would tie the U-M record for wins in a season (8, 2017-18).
• Junior attackman Josh Zawada ranks second in U-M history for points in a career (130, 74g, 56a) and is now 15 points away from breaking Ian King's (2014-17) program record of 144. His average of 5.90 points/game ranks sixth in the country, while his goals per game (3.40) rank seventh and his assists (2.50) check in at No. 10.
• Fellow attackman sophomore Michael Boehm enters the week with 50 points, the second most in a season in program history. He trails the current number of 59 held by Zawada, and has already broken the previous single-season record of 48. He ranks No. 14 in the country in points-per-game (5.00), No. 31 in goals (2.90) and No. 22 in assists (2.10).
• Freshman Ryan Cohen ranks No. 44 nationally in points-per-game (3.90), ranking second amongst all freshmen behind Bucknell's Connor Davis (4.33/game). Cohen started on the attack unit in U-M's first nine games before sliding to midfield against Johns Hopkins, where he marked four points (1g, 3a.)
• With scores from senior Gavin Legg and freshman Emmett Houlihan, the Wolverines have 23 players score at least one goal in a season, establishing a new program record that was set during the 2018 season.
• As a team, U-M ranks third in the country in points-per-game (25.60) and fifth in scoring offense (15.70 goals/game). The defensive unit ranks ninth and allows 9.50 goals/game. Â
• Sophomore goalie Shane Carr is fourth in the NCAA in goals-against average (8.99/game) and fifth in save percentage (59 percent). Over the last three games, the first-year starter is averaging 16 stops per contest.
• Junior Jake Bonomi ranks third on the team in goals with 23 and has set the U-M record for goals by a midfielder in a season -- surpassing Decker Curran's mark of 22, established during the 2018 season.
• The Wolverines have excelled at the faceoff dot with a 61 percent mark as a team to rank seventh in the country. The tandem of sophomore Justin Wietfeldt and junior Nick Rowlett have developed as one of the best tandems in the country. Wietfeldt ranks No. 4 in the nation,  winning 90-of-143 (63 percent) with 48 ground balls. Rowlett ranks 18th and sits at 58 percent (76-of-131) with 40 pickups. Rowlett also recently broke the U-M career record for ground balls in a career that was held by Brad Lott (2012-15) with 180.
• Per Lacrosse Reference, U-M's cumulative offensive efficiency ranks No. 15, while the defensive unit ranks seventh. Zawada ranks fifth in the country in the sites' statistical Tewaaraton' with 39.98 expected goals added, while Boehm is No. 8 (37.77). U-M's strength of schedule is ranked No. 29, while the team's Lax-ELO ranking is No. 38.
Opponent History
U-M has never beaten the Terps, with its latest matchup in the 2021 Big Ten Tournament semifinals. Mayland won that contest 16-8. Josh Zawada led the scoring for the Wolverines, tallying two goals and two assists. Jake Bonomi also scored two goals while John Kiracofe made 11 saves.
Opponent History
No. 1 Maryland is 8-0 on the season and has sat atop the Inside Lacrosse rankings since week one. Last weekend, Maryland opened its Big Ten schedule against Penn State, defeating the Nittany Lions, 18-7, in State College.
The Terps attack was led by graduate student and Villanova transfer Keegan Khan, who had four goals and one assist. Sophomore attackman Eric Malever also marked a five-point game, adding three goals and two assists. Ten different Terps scored in the victory.
The Maryland defense locked down the Penn State attack, holding it scoreless for more than 23 minutes. Junior goalie Logan McNaney made nine saves, while backup Drew Morris recorded five stops. Maryland was dominant at the face-off, winning 21-of-29, thanks to specialists Luke Wierman and Gavin Tygh.
Goalie Logan McNaney ranks second in the country in goals-against average (8.82 goals/game), while Long Wisnauskas is No. 8 in the NCAA in points-per-game (5.62) and assists (2.62/game). Wierman enters the contest winning 68 percent of faceoffs, the second-best mark in the country.
