BALTIMORE, Md. -- The University of Michigan men's lacrosse team opened up Big Ten Conference play Saturday (March 26), falling to the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays by a 15-12 score at Homewood Field.
Michigan (7-3, 0-1 B1G) jumped out to a 1-0 lead less than a minute into the contest, with sophomore Michael Boehm putting home his first of two goals on the afternoon. Junior Josh Zawada scored twice in the opening quarter as well with the Wolverines leading 4-2 with just under four minutes to go in the first.
Johns Hopkins (5-5, 1-0 B1G) then went on a 3-0 run to take a 5-4 lead before sophomore Aidan Mulholland put an end to the run at 8:05 and knotted the contest at 5. U-M was outscored 5-1 in the second and 3-0 the final eight minutes of the half to trail 8-5 at the intermission.
At the 8:05 mark of the second quarter, junior Nick Rowlett broke the U-M career record for ground balls. With two pickups on the day, he moved to 180 on his career and surpassed the previous record of 178 that was held by Brad Lott (2013-16).
The Wolverines scored their first marker in just over 15 minutes of game play at the 8:25 mark of the third, with Boehm marking his second score to cut the Hopkins lead to 8-6. Following a Hopkins marker, Zawada tallied his third of the day with 35 seconds left in the third to bring it to 9-7, but the Wolverines surrendered a score with seven seconds left to trail 10-7 heading into the final quarter.
U-M brought the score to a two-goal margin yet again at the 11:38 mark, as junior Jake Bonomi scored his first marker of the day at 11:38 of the fourth. Following a long-pole goal from senior Gavin Legg at 10:04, U-M crept within one score with 8:31 with a lefty hammer from the outside from freshman Emmett Houlihan, the first of his career, bringing the score to 11-10.
From there, Hopkins outscored U-M 4-0 from 7:59 to the 42-second mark to stretch the lead to 15-10. U-M closed the game with scores from Cohen (32 seconds) and Bonomi (19 seconds) to bring the game to the final score of 15-12.
U-M outshot Hopkins, 42-41, won the ground ball battle, 31-29, and won 20-of-30 faceoffs, led by Justin Wietfeldt's 17-of-23. The Wolverines were 0-for-4 on extra-man chances and turned the ball over 20 times.
The Wolverines will return home from its two-game road stretch and host the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins on Saturday (April 2) at noon. The matchup will be streamed via BTN+.
